Eighteen picks across five meetings, and the shape of the day is unusual. Goodwood is where we are swinging at the fences, Epsom is where we are backing our judgement hardest, and everything in between falls somewhere on that scale. Ten of today’s selections are bigger than 4/1, which tells you how open a lot of these races look on paper.
Start at Epsom, because that is where the strongest work is. Imperial Cult in the 6:40 is the one horse today we would struggle to argue against. Three wins from his last five, proven over the trip and on the ground, and the sense that he is improving faster than the handicapper can keep up with. Six days between runs is quick but nothing worse than that, and a short price can still be the right price when a horse is on that kind of curve. Earlier on the card, Show Biz Kid at 5:30 is the horse our form work kept circling back to. The trip on fast ground is no problem, the weight is coming down and his fastest time came recently. Fourteen days fresh as well.
We finish at Epsom too, with Sugar Sugar in the 8:25. She was beaten last time by horses that have gone on to win since, so that second reads better than it looks on the page. The weight has dropped, stall two is a fair spot in a small sprint field, and 6.0 feels generous for a mare going the right way.
Goodwood is the other extreme. Four picks there and not one of them short, with U S S Charleston and Gonna Fly both in territory where you are paid properly for being right once. The Bookkeeper and Euston Hall sit in the middle ground. If Goodwood clicks it will define the whole day.
Nottingham is the steadier card. Great Blasket and Supplicate are both odds-on or thereabouts, and Muddy Nora at 4:55 is the interesting one. Her recent finishing positions undersell her, she was third last time over this trip and ground, and she now drops to a mark that gives her a proper chance. Stall three is the right side of the draw. Wolverhampton closes things out and Musical Soldier in the 8:42 fits that race better than anything else in it. Drawn three, winner last time out, surface exactly as he likes it, and a yard operating at 28 percent tends to know when to have a go. Over in Ireland, Galway gives us El Cairos as the meeting’s main play.
Yesterday brought Bow Echo home at 2.1, with Optician, Tees George and Lady Milton all placing. A solid enough platform. Today asks a bigger question, because the returns are sitting out at Goodwood and we will know by teatime whether the gamble was worth taking.
